Robert Friend, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and one of the famous World War II Tuskegee Airmen, has been featured in a national magazine.
Friend, who currently resides with his daughter in Irvine, was a patient at Lake Forest Nursing Center in Lake Forest, California, in spring 2018 and was chosen by the facility’s parent company, Life Care Centers of America, to be included in the 2018 edition of its LEADER magazine. The publication features the life stories of a handful of residents from Life Care facilities around the country.
Friend served the United States during World War II as one of the historic Tuskegee Airmen, African-American pilots who played a significant role in the war and paved the way for desegregation of the armed forces. As one of the famed Red Tail pilots, Friend flew missions in Italy and surrounding parts of Europe. He faced danger from enemy fire as he provided cover for bombers and flew reconnaissance missions.
Friend went on to serve in the Air Force for 30 years in various roles and in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
